British government cuts hit the poorest in society

In a statement on November 20, 2024, a spokesperson for Comhairle Uladh (Ulster Executive), Sinn Féin Poblachtach said: “The failed administration of Stormont continues to oversee the growing gulf between the haves and have-nots in the Occupied Six Counties.

“This has been evidenced when the poorest in our society have seen a paltry one-off winter payment of £100. Let’s not forget that pensioners had been expecting £300, not just this winter but every winter. With inflation, they could even have anticipated that nudging upwards in line with heating costs.

“The commissioner for older people in the Occupied Six Counties, Eddie Lynch, addressed the fact that even £100 left a shortfall in what was being relied upon, emphasising that ‘people will struggle this winter’.

“Sinn Féin Poblachtach condemns the shameful actions of the British government in reducing the winter fuel payment. Worst of still are those pensioners who have been identified as having a little more money and will get nothing! It’s the same old story; the swinging of the axe always falls upon the poorest in our society.

“It seems that there is plenty of money for warmongering and the supporting of genocide.”
