Day 365: the British government continues to ignore those families affected by the war.

In a statement on May 1, 2025 a spokesperson for Comhairle Uladh (Ulster Executive), Sinn Féin Poblachtach said: “There has been a lot of promises to amend exiting British legislation associated with the Legacy Act, yet the heartbreak continues in the Occupied Six Counties.

“A point to note: after May 1, 2024 responsibility for Troubles cases transferred to the Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery (ICRIR).

“Sinn Féin Poblachtach have been clear for the last 365 days. The decision not to engage with this controversial legacy body, Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery (ICRIR), isn’t political but justifiable.

“With each passing day the families talk about the pain and heartache becoming greater and what is believed to compound such feelings is that the British government plans to retains the ICRIR commission.

“This ICRIR commission is being viewed by the Relatives for Justice, Amnesty International and Committee on the Administration of Justice as not being independent from the British government.

“Sinn Féin Poblachtach says concerns have also been raised about the ICRIR body after it emerged that 10 former RUC officers and staff are employed by it. The lack of impartiality is an attempt to protect British state participants from accountability.
