In a statement on June 26, 2025 a spokesperson for Cumann Tomás Ó hAirt, Sinn Féin Poblachtach, Ard Mhacha Thuaidh said: “The RUC/PSNI have spent £20,000 flying so-called elite officers to Dubai to take part in a five-day policing competition in which they narrowly avoided finishing last.
“Historically, the Headquarters Mobile Support Unit (HMSU) have been described as a tactical unit and part of the RUC Special Branch, supposedly, the RUC policing equivalent to the SAS. They came about as one component of a broader three-part plan to impose normalisation on the Occupied Six Counties. This unit had also been involved in several controversial ‘shoot-to-kill’ incidents against Irish Republicans.
“According to the Belfast Telegraph this RUC/PSNI ‘elite’ unit took part in the February 2025 world SWAT games in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). They finished 97th out of 103 teams. The RUC/PSNI Headquarters Military Support Unit (HMSU) sent along their elite sharpshooters, who tested their abilities and from the beginning, they were recorded as misfiring and even their elite sniper was recorded as having four attempts at the same number of targets, missing with each bullet. Prior to taking these shots the HMSU personnel struggled to get the rounds out of his pocket.
“During the April 2023 American Presidential visit to Occupied Ireland, the RUC/PSNI personnel would have been tasked to secure inner Belfast while Joe Biden stayed overnight at the Grand Central hotel. The news media at the time reported an incident when a Belfast resident stumbled across highly sensitive information lying on the ground, marked with the force’s header and detailing how RUC/PSNI officers would provide security.
“Sinn Féin Poblachtach says these British mercenaries are a gift that keeps giving, with failure after failure, during a time when they are being tasked by the British administration at Stormont to show value for money. The results from the UAE have been described as embarrassing and a further waste of money by the Stormont regime on what is supposed to be the elite unit within the British colonial police.”
