In a statement on May 28, 2025 a spokesperson for Cumann Tomás Ó hAirt, Sinn Féin Poblachtach, Ard Mhacha Thuaidh said: “We have to demonstrate that the Irish struggle for national freedom and sovereignty is omnipresent. We cannot forget that Ireland was united before our country was partitioned by Britain under threat of immediate and terrible war.

“In light of recent developments, we have observed that numerous groups and individuals in the public sphere are making statements regarding a two-tier British justice system in Ireland. On a point of principle, it has to be understood that to expect anything different from colonial Britain is to engage in a fools game.

“The presence of the murderous British regime in occupied Ireland is marked by enforced policies and practices against the will of the nationalist people. These control measures are deceptive and serve to generate pretence, poverty, corruption and maintain the sectarian status quo.

“Thia week a senior UVF figure, gunrunner, British government liaison and pseudo International peace maker get a wink and a nod from some high profile figures as well as glowing references from hangers-on that had an association with the so-called British peace process. In the end, Winston ‘Winkie’ Irvine got a slap on the wrist. In contrast, if an Irish Republican took part in the same activity he or she would be sentenced under British terror laws and would be compelled to a maximum sentence plus.

“As Irish Republicans we will continue to defy the British presence in occupied Ireland. We would be foolish not to take cognisance of how current British laws impact on Republican activism. On the other hand, where it can be achieved we should demonstrate opposition and disrupt the functioning of the British courts in occupied Ireland.

Sinn Féin Poblachtach does not advocate for harsher sentences towards a particular demographic of people; to do so is to recognise or endorse the out-workings of the colonial PSNI/RUC and the British courts.”
