An Easter Reflection
In a statement on May 13, 2025 a spokesperson for Comhairle Uladh (Ulster Executive), Sinn Féin Poblachtach said: “ ‘Constitutional’ nationalism removes the right of the people of Ireland to the ownership of Ireland and to the unfettered control of Irish destinies, to be sovereign and indefeasible.
“The term constitutional nationalism refers to those who have adopted a strategy of engaging with the system to destroy it.
“Republicans realise it is a futile strategy which has no end. We remain loyal to the democratic socialist republic proclaimed in arms in 1916. We will not just pay lip-service to that glorious week but instead carry on and fulfil its aspirations.
“Together we remain strong and loyal to the Republican struggle and gather with honour and dignity to remember those who had given their lives for Irish freedom. Others have gathered at the graves of Ireland’s patriot dead to further their political agenda.
“We witnessed in Carrickmore, Co Tyrone, a section of the Provisional (PSF) leadership pleading with their membership to, ‘hold tightly to your hopes, to your beliefs, to your determination and promising this is a time of great change. We are living in the end days of partition as a new generation looks to the possibilities of unity with fresh hearts.’ Ironically after paying lip service, another section appeared in Dublin for the Free State’s commemoration.
“Throughout history the Irish people have been plagued with quislings and careerists who have sold out the people of Ireland for power and finance provided by the British occupier. Today, the Provisionals have taken up that mantle and continued the seoinín lineage.
“When reflecting on Easter 1916 we must look deeper than the call to arms and the fighting that ensued. A comparison can be made between the state of Irish politics then and now. What we can say is that Ireland was engulfed then by constitutional nationalism as it is in the here and now.
“Sinn Féin Poblachtach calls on all our members and supporters to remain steadfast in your efforts to continue the work on the merits of the Éire Nua and Saol Nua proposals for a Socialist Republic. We ought not to be deterred by the whispers of parliamentarians or the calls to come in from the cold.
“We must continue the work of Ó Brádaigh, Ó Conaill, Pearse, Connolly and Tone.”
