Catholic RUC/PSNI personnel take legal action alleging a sectarian culture in the British police

In a statement on March 12, 2025 a spokesperson for Cumann Tomás Ó hAirt, Sinn Féin Poblachtach, Ard Mhacha Thuaidh: “It was reported on March 12 that four serving or former Catholic members if the RUC/PSNI are taking High Court action against the police in relation to alleged sectarian discrimination. The question could be asked: ‘What did they expect from the British colonial police?

“This self-styled British militia masquerades as the PSNI but in effect the RUC (Patten Report,1999) recommendation [150]: ‘While the Royal Ulster Constabulary should not be disbanded, it should henceforth be named the Northern Ireland Police Service’.

“Former Head of Discipline Branch Jon Burrows said on his watch sectarianism was never an issue and furthermore he doesn’t recognise the picture of a sectarian culture within the RUC/PSNI. He also doesn’t think there was collusion between them and loyalist paramilitaries.

“This man exudes hate for the Republican nationalist community which was demonstrated back in March 2018. At that time, Chief Inspector Burrows instructed his lackeys to use heavy-handed 1980’s tactics to disrupt the annual Easter Rising commemoration in North Lurgan.

“From then, as an ex-cop, he has defended the poor record of a publicly shamed organisation. Let’s not forget this man’s poor decision-making which caused injury to a number of attendees during which fear of RUC/PSNI was instilled into nationalist children.
